ON VISITING WOOERS' ALLEY
What is Wooers' Alley?

Wooers' Alley Then and Now - in the 1850s and 2020s
Wooers' Alley Cottage was once the home of the Paton family. Situated on the steep banks of the Tower Burn in Dunfermline, not far from the Abbey and St Margaret's Cave, its rugged historic surroundings and local folklore inspired much of the Patons' most famous work. The mossy rocks, meandering stream, wild flowers and twisting ivy-covered trees of the Wooers' Alley garden featured in Sir Joseph Noël Paton's fairy paintings, Amelia Robertson Hill's statue of Robert Burns, Waller Hugh Paton's early landscapes and Joseph Neil Paton's damask designs.
The cottage, which was once open to the public, displaying Joseph Neil Paton's extraordinary collection of historic artefacts, was sadly demolished in 1926. But our volunteers are working to restore the garden to its former glory, so that locals and visitors can once again enjoy its surroundings and be inspired.

What's happening at Wooers'?
Here's a flavour of what our volunteers have been getting up to at Wooers' Alley, as they transform the woodland garden into a place of beauty again.

BEFORE: Unloved and unwelcoming
AFTER: A favourite walk for local people & dogs
Before our volunteers got to work...
Wooers' Alley Woodland had been neglected for decades. The paths were completely overgrown with ivy and cherry laurel, the burn was polluted and the garden was strewn with rubbish.
