Joseph Noël Paton - an artist's life

Exhibition at Dunfermline Carnegie Library & Galleries
14th September 2024 - 9th February 2025

We collaborated with Fife Cultural Trust to create a major retrospective exhibition on the life and work of Sir Joseph Noël Paton at Dunfermline Carnegie Library and Galleries.

The exhibition featured important works from various major museums and galleries, such as Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, the National Gallery of Scotland and the Royal Scottish Academy, as well as paintings, engravings and drawings from the Fife Cultural Trust collection. It also offered a rare opportunity to see paintings, sketches and personal items kindly loaned by the Paton family, many on public display for the first time.

The Patons of Dunfermline Charity worked with Fife Cultural Trust to secure many of these rare loans and we give our heartfelt thanks to curator Lesley Lettice for the amount of research and dedication she showed to this project, to highlight Noël Paton's extraordinary life as well as his art.

The exhibition was a huge success, attracting media attention and almost 18,000 visitors.

The Patons of Wooers' Alley

Exhibition at Fire Station Creative, Dunfermline
Jan 19th - Feb 26th, 2023

We collaborated with Fire Station Creative on an exhibition exploring how the Patons' childhood home at Wooers' Alley inspired their most important work, including Sir Joseph Noël Paton's fairy paintings, Amelia Robertson (Paton) Hill's statue of Robert the Bruce in Dumfries and Joseph Neil Paton's damask designs. The display featured original art works by Sir Joseph Noël Paton and never before seen historic artefacts from Wooers' Alley Cottage. Alongside the exhibition were a double-bill lecture by Emily Learmont and Dr Allan Lennie on Sir Joseph Noël Paton, and a talk by George Robertson FSAScot on Amelia Robertson Hill (née Paton) â€‹.

The exhibition was a great success in raising local awareness of the importance of Wooers' Alley and its significance in the Patons' work. It also helped us to recruit a team of volunteers to help transform the Wooers' Alley Woodland Garden.
